I am jimichen. For more than 20 years, I have worked across algorithm research, system architecture, and engineering leadership. Over the past decade, I have been a founder—running a profitable small company and now working independently while building new ventures. Through every change in role, my love for the craft of programming has stayed constant, and I still write core code by hand every day.

Two years ago, I picked up Rust and began building new projects with it. Even with two decades of engineering intuition, crossing Rust’s learning curve was humbling. Along the way, I kept detailed notes on every place where the language fought my existing mental models. Notes like these have a short shelf life: once a mechanism clicks, the curse of knowledge sets in and you forget why it ever felt hard. While those friction points were still fresh, I turned them into this open guide—deriving Rust from first principles rather than memorizing rules. AI assisted with drafting and language polish, while the technical perspective, examples, and lines of derivation are mine.
